As some of you know, I’m a US Government employee. There’s a few more grievances to be aired this year than normal.
(aka: “ Merry Christmas, you’re unemployed”)

What irks me about it all is that POTUS agreed to a deal then changed his mind. The whole thing has me shaking my head.

Help me: where is the relevance here?

Honestly, I have no idea. There’s no other place for me to vent this and keep a low profile. Or I wound up in the wrong thr ead. Or I haven’t gotten myself supper before posting it.
Either way, caramel can go fuck off.

You guys normally get backpay when things settle, right? So the shutdown doesn’t really even save the government much money overall. Hopefully you can enjoy the time off and it’s all resolved in a couple weeks at most.

Shutdowns cost billions, as the feds can’t bring in revenue from things like national parks and such. Plus, non essential employees end up getting paid for not working. Essential employees still have to work, they just won’t get a paycheck until the assholes holding the purse strings unfuck themselves.
So we are now paying billions over an argument about a wall which we were promised Mexico was going to pay for (and which isn’t going to keep desperate people from filling open jobs).

Time and time again, he has shown he will not stand by his words.
I’ve just assumed that anything and everything he says, he will flip on at random.

If I worked for the secret service and had to protect our national embarrassment without pay, I’d be seriously reconsidering my career choices.

There’s not actually any obligation to pay back-pay to furloughed workers, it’s just always been done. Given the low importance of norms, I would not be at all surprised if some Republicans felt that this was a good opportunity to stick it to the “dee p state”. Luckily, any new budget will probably end up having to pass through the new House, which would never agree to that.
And of course contractors working for the government might still be out money, since hourly contractors won’t have any hours to work, and the government won’t make it up to them.

Hopefully we’ll get paid, but it’s not guaranteed. Plus no pay until it’s sorted, which isn’t good for my mortgage.

Ugh no! My agency is funded through FY19 so we’ll all be back after the holidays both white and green badges - but I know the drill. I’m fortunate enough to work in a job they really really don’t want to shut down but it still makes me nervous especially when it happens this time of year
